Founder Story

Donn Kirkland is the founder of The Overlook Initiative, a nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding awareness about human trafficking and the broader life challenges affecting boys and men.

The organization was born from a striking realization: the first known shelter in the United States dedicated specifically to trafficked boys and men did not open until the late 2010s. For Kirkland, this moment revealed how deeply the experiences of boys and men had been overlooked in services, research, and public narratives surrounding trafficking.

This realization sparked a deeper exploration into how society understands vulnerability, masculinity, and exploitation, and how communication plays a role in shaping that understanding.

Kirkland’s work is rooted in lived observation and community awareness.

Growing up in North Philadelphia, he witnessed many of the complex realities young people navigate, including economic pressure, housing instability, limited opportunity, and community violence. These early experiences shaped his understanding of how social environments influence opportunity, vulnerability, and resilience.

Later living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area, he encountered similar patterns in very different communities. Across environments, he observed persistent gaps in support systems for boys and men navigating exploitation, trauma, and broader life challenges.

He also noticed how societal expectations around masculinity often discouraged boys and men from speaking openly about their experiences or seeking help.

These observations eventually led to a deeper question: How do the stories we tell about trafficking influence who is seen, who is believed, and who receives support?

In 2022, Kirkland began doctoral studies in Strategic Media and Communication, focusing on how communication shapes public understanding of complex social issues.

As he entered the dissertation phase of his doctoral program in late 2024, his research examined how advocates communicate the experiences of male survivors of human trafficking.

His work explores how storytelling, narrative framing, and media representation influence how society understands exploitation and how responses are developed.

Through this research, Kirkland has examined how ethical storytelling and media literacy can improve awareness, challenge misconceptions, and expand public conversations around trafficking and vulnerability.

His scholarship contributes to communication research by highlighting how advocacy narratives influence public perception and policy discussions.

In addition to his research, Kirkland brings over 15 years of experience in communications, marketing, and strategic storytelling.

Throughout his career, he has worked across multiple areas of communication, including:

  • Marketing and brand strategy

  • Media and public relations

  • Digital storytelling and social media strategy

  • Video production and visual storytelling

  • Strategic communications planning

His professional background includes leading communications initiatives, developing brand strategies, and managing digital platforms designed to reach diverse audiences and amplify important messages.

This communications expertise informs the work of The Overlook Initiative, particularly its focus on ethical storytelling, media literacy, and narrative awareness.

Kirkland believes that the way social issues are communicated plays a powerful role in shaping public understanding and influencing how communities respond.
